Stump grinding in Lake Lure: slope first, stump second
Lake Lure sits in Hickory Nut Gorge in Rutherford County, with the lake in the bottom and mountains on every side. Most homes are built on the slopes above the water, or along the narrow roads that climb away from it. A stump here is rarely in the middle of a flat lawn. It is beside a steep drive, below a deck, between the house and the bank, or on the strip between the road and the lake.
That makes access the whole question. The grinder is a Carlton on tracks, narrow enough for a yard gate or the side of a house. It fits where a truck-mounted machine cannot. There are still lots where the machine cannot be taken to the stump safely, and you will be told that plainly instead of being quoted and then cancelled.
Getting there, and around the lake
The yard is in Tryon. The way up is through Columbus and Mill Spring, then north on NC-9 to the lake. On the south shore the main road is US-64/74A, which runs on to Chimney Rock, and the lots between that road and the water are tight. The north shore, along Buffalo Shoals Road and out to Rumbling Bald, is resort and second-home ground with golf courses. Bat Cave, further up the gorge, is covered on the same trip.
Storm stumps and lifted root plates
Helene, in September 2024, brought down a great many trees across Rutherford County. A tree that was cut leaves a stump. A tree that blew over leaves a root plate standing on edge with a hole behind it, and that is a different job. The loader and the excavator handle root balls a person cannot move, and the hole is backfilled afterwards. Send a photo and say which one you have.

Many Lake Lure houses are not lived in all year. You do not need to be at the house to get a price. Two photos usually do it: the stump with something beside it for scale, and the way in from where a truck and trailer can park. Add the address and how many stumps there are. Near the water and on shared ground
Lake Lure is an incorporated town with its own rules, and many of the communities around the lake have an owners’ association as well. If a stump is close to the shoreline, in a road right-of-way or on common ground, check with the Town of Lake Lure or your association before a date is set. That answer has to come from them, not from us.
Grindings on a slope
On a lot that drops toward the lake, loose grindings should not be left where heavy rain can carry them downhill. They can be raked back into the hole and topped with soil, or loaded and hauled away. What sets the price in Lake Lure
Lake Lure is further from the yard than the Polk County towns, so distance is part of the price. One small stump on its own is the least economical way to buy it. Can you grind a stump on a steep lakeside lot?
Often, but it has to be looked at honestly first. Send one photo taken from below the stump looking up and one from above. If getting the machine in would risk it or the property, you will be told so before anything is booked.
Do you really come up to Lake Lure from Tryon?
Yes. It is the same run as Columbus and Mill Spring, carried on up NC-9. Because it is further out, Lake Lure work books best with other stumps in the same area on the same day.
A tree blew over and the roots are standing up out of the ground. Is that still stump grinding?
Not always. A lifted root plate usually has to be lifted out with the loader or the excavator, and the hole filled afterwards. Send a photo and you will be told which job it is.
I am not at the house most of the year. Can I still get a quote?
Yes. A photo of the stump with something for scale, a photo of the way in, and the address are usually enough for a real number without a visit. Estimates are free.
