Grinding and Removing Stumps in Lyman, SC

Groce's Stop was the name before there was a town: a general store that A. B. Groce opened in the mid-1870s. In 1923 Pacific Mills bought more than 700 acres from the Groce family, and it went on to build a village of 375 houses for the workers at its printing and finishing mill. The mill closed for good in 2005, yet Lyman kept growing. The census counted 3,243 people in 2010 and 6,173 in 2020. So a stump here might stand behind a mill house or in a yard cut out of woods not long ago.

Lyman sits comfortably within the area JB Stump Grinding & Land Management covers from its base in Tryon, North Carolina. One stump of fair size justifies the trip, and three in one visit share the cost of unloading. Jordan prices every job himself. A phone picture of the stump with a tape lying across the top, a second of the side yard or gate, and the name of your street usually settle the number. The stump grinding and stump removal page walks through the method.

The town will not haul the stump away

Lyman's public works rules are plain about it. The town does not collect whole trees, stumps or land-clearing debris, and it cannot pick up limbs longer than six feet. When a contractor takes a tree down, the rules leave the waste with that contractor or the owner. Grinding avoids most of the problem. The stump turns into chips, and those go back into the hole under a layer of soil, onto a pile for your beds, or onto a trailer for a separate price. Nothing heavy ends up at the curb waiting for a truck that is not coming.

Near Lyman Lake, ask SJWD first

Lyman Lake is a 350-acre reservoir on the Middle Tyger River and the main raw water source for SJWD Water District. SJWD owns the land around it up to the 850.2-foot contour and requires a permit for all work in the buffer area, applied for ahead of time through the Lake Warden Office. Its rules also say yard debris must not be pushed into the lake. So a stump on a lot that backs onto the water starts with a call to the wardens. Our guide to stump grinding on lake and waterfront lots covers the rest.

Tall poplars at the back of new lots

Newer Lyman lots often keep a strip of woods at the back, and the tallest tree in it is often a tulip poplar. NC State Extension says tulip poplar grows fast and thrives in deep, moist soil along streams, and that its wood is weak, so limbs break in wind, ice and snow. It also describes the roots as shallow. When one is taken down near the house, the stump is broad and its roots fan out just under the turf. The grinder chews the trunk and its flare down below the surface; roots further out stay in the soil and rot. Other Spartanburg County towns are listed on the county hub.

Will the Town of Lyman pick up a stump if I cut the tree down myself?

Not according to the town's own rules. Lyman's public works page says whole trees, stumps and land-clearing debris are not collected and must be disposed of by the property owner or the contractor. Grinding turns the stump into chips that stay on your lot, raked into the hole or piled for beds. For brush and small limbs, ask Town Hall what goes out for pickup.

My Lyman lot backs onto Lyman Lake. Who do I ask before a stump comes out?

SJWD Water District. It owns the land around Lyman Lake up to the 850.2-foot contour and requires a permit for all work in the buffer area, applied for through the Lake Warden Office before anything starts. Find out where that line falls on your lot first. Then send Jordan pictures of the stump and the slope running down to it.

Can you grind a stump in the old Pacific Mills village in Lyman?

Yes. Village houses sit near each other, so the route to the back yard is what to check. The grinder is narrow and tracked, built to pass an ordinary garden gate. Measure the tightest gap, whether that is gate posts or a house wall and a fence, and include the figure with your pictures. Should a fence section need lifting out and refitting, Jordan checks with you before touching it.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
