Stump grinding in Chimney Rock

Grinding and Removing Stumps in Chimney Rock, NC

Chimney Rock has flooded before. In 1916 a flood tore through the gorge and took out the Chimney Rock bridge, and on September 4, 1996, thirteen inches of rain fell in three hours. Then on September 27, 2024, the remnants of Helene brought what the village calls historic and catastrophic flooding, destroying homes, businesses, bridges, roads and utilities. Water and sewer came back to Main Street in July 2025, and businesses reopened that August. The rebuilding is still going on.

The village is small, 140 people at the 2020 census, and lies in Hickory Nut Gorge below the 315-foot gneiss monolith it is named for, with Lake Lure on its border. It is a Rutherford County village and sits well within the area we cover. Trees cut during the cleanup, stumps along the river and root plates that went over in the storm make up most of the stump work here. For a stump still rooted in place, the stump grinding page walks through the job.

Village zoning first, then the county

Chimney Rock incorporated as a village in 1991 and adopted a comprehensive zoning ordinance in 1999. For building work since Helene, the village's storm assistance page tells owners to get a zoning approval letter from the village first, then go to Rutherford County, which coordinates building permits and flood zone management with the village. A stump near the river, or one that is part of a rebuild, belongs in that conversation. Ask the village office what applies to your lot before the work is booked.

Tulip poplar along the water

NC State Extension's plant page puts tulip poplar at its happiest in damp, deep ground beside creeks and down in the low coves of the mountains. It also describes the tree as fast-growing, very tall and weak in the wood, so wind and ice snap its limbs. And it regrows from a cut: the page says it can be coppiced, felled to the ground every couple of years and allowed to shoot again. Grinding below grade stops that. Our tulip poplar stump guide covers the roots and the sprouts in Chimney Rock yards and anywhere else.

Rock under the stump

The rock Chimney Rock is made of is Henderson Gneiss, and the same rock underlies most of the area. On a gorge lot a stump may sit on a ledge, wrap its roots around a boulder, or have stone a few inches down. A grinding wheel is made to cut wood, not rock, so the depth is set by what lies under the stump, and you are told if stone stops it short of the usual depth. Send a close photo of the base, and read grinding stumps around rocks.

Can you remove a storm root ball from a Chimney Rock lot that is still being rebuilt?

Yes. When a storm tips a tree, the upturned mass of roots and soil gets picked up by the excavator or the track loader, it goes out on a trailer, and the crater is backfilled. On a lot under repair, tell us where contractors, materials and new utility lines are, and check with the village about anything tied to the rebuild. Two photos and the address get the quote started.

Do I need the village's approval to grind a stump in Chimney Rock?

Ask the village office. Chimney Rock has its own zoning ordinance, and building work since Helene goes through a village zoning letter and then Rutherford County. A stump is a small job, but near the river or as part of a rebuild it is worth checking what applies. That answer has to come from the village, not from a contractor.

We are in Lake Lure, just past Chimney Rock. Can both be done on one trip?

Often, yes. The village and the town of Lake Lure share a border in Hickory Nut Gorge, and we cover both. If you and a neighbor in either place have stumps, say so when you call, because one visit for several properties saves loading and setup. Our Lake Lure stump grinding page covers lake lots.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Send two photos

One of the stump with something for scale, one of the way in, plus your town. Call, use the form, or email the photos.

Get your quote

Jordan quotes every job himself. Estimates are free, and you have the number before any work starts.

Lines get marked

Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.

The grind

The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.

Clean ground

Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.
