Yard Debris Disposal in Polk County, NC: Brush, Limbs and Leaves

By JB Stump Grinding & Land Management. Updated October 2026.

In Polk County, NC, yard debris goes to the county transfer station and landfill on NC 9 north of Mill Spring, which lists stumps, brush and yard waste among the materials it handles, while Tryon and Columbus residents can also use their town's limb and leaf pickup. The county's mobile recycling trailers are for household recyclables, not brush, and burning is allowed only under state rules.

Where it goes depends on where you live

Polk County has one main place for yard debris and a few town services layered on top. Inside Tryon or Columbus, the town collects limbs and leaves under its own rules. Inside Saluda, the city office is the one to ask. Everywhere else, including Mill Spring, Green Creek and the rural roads in between, the answer is the county transfer station or a hired haul. Before you load anything, check the current rules on the county and town pages, since they do change.

The transfer station near Mill Spring

The county's transfer station and landfill sit on NC 9 above Mill Spring. On the county's own list of what the landfill handles, stumps come first, followed by brush, yard waste, metal, appliances, car batteries, waste oil, tires, concrete, block, brick, asphalt, computers, oil filters, antifreeze and wooden pallets. Few sites in the region will take a stump at all, so this one is worth knowing about. Before hauling one, phone the landfill and ask how root balls should arrive and whether dirt clinging to the roots matters.

Weight, permits and who can use it

The county's transfer station guidelines tie household use to a resident permit, shown to the scale attendant on every trip. That permit is for household waste from one residence. It cannot be used for commercial or business activity or for waste from multi-family buildings, and it is not available to people living outside Polk County. Yard waste under a set weight per load is listed with the permit's recyclables. Loads over that weight are weighed and charged by the ton for the whole load, and construction waste is always weighed and charged. Check the guidelines for the current figures.

Inside Tryon

Tryon's sanitation page says the street department picks up debris, yard waste, trimmings and brush. Grass clippings and leaves go out in bags, and brush and limbs go to the curb cut to no more than eight feet long. Small amounts are picked up without charge, and larger loads are charged by the load. Debris from clearing a lot for construction has to be removed by the owner or the contractor, and spoil from a big tree removal needs advance arrangements. Regular garbage pickup excludes tires, shingles, electronics and hazardous materials.

Inside Columbus

Columbus crews collect limbs, leaves and clippings from the roadside on Fridays, with limbs cut to six feet or shorter. Larger loads can be arranged for a per-load fee, but lot-clearing debris is excluded. Big items such as trees, stumps and heavy brush go to the town's land clearing debris site. Leaves are collected once a year by the town's leaf vacuum, roughly from mid-November into January, from piles at the curb. The town composts its yard waste in turned windrows that have to reach a temperature high enough to kill pathogens, and the process takes about a year.

Saluda, Green Creek and the recycling trailers

The county's mobile recycling units visit Tryon, Saluda, Green Creek and Columbus on set mornings. Their guidelines list paper, cardboard and food and drink containers. They are not for brush or yard waste, and the county asks people not to leave anything at those sites unless the trailer is there. The guidelines also warn that any dumpsters at those sites are private, not public. In Saluda, the city's trash page covers carts only, so call the city office about limbs and leaves. Out in the county, plan on the transfer station.

Burning it instead

Burning is the option people ask about most, and inside the towns it is usually the wrong one. North Carolina ties yard waste burning to places with no public collection, so a house on Tryon's or Columbus's pickup route generally has to use the pickup. Out in the county, plant debris from your own land can be burned within the state's set hours and air quality limits, with a Forest Service permit in most cases. Wooded hollows and pasture edges catch fast on a dry, breezy afternoon, so pick a calm day. Our NC and SC burning guide sets out the permit and the safety steps.

Stumps, storm piles and big loads

A trailer of brush is manageable. A cleared fence line, a blown-down tree or a backyard's worth of stumps is not. For a big pile, a roll-off container sent out from Tryon can sit by the pile for as long as the cleanup takes; tell Jordan it is brush so the load goes where brush is taken. For stumps, grinding normally leaves nothing to haul; stump grinding in Polk County explains how it works close to home.

Common Questions

Does the Polk County NC landfill take stumps?

It is one of the few in the area that does. The county names stumps first on its list of what the landfill and transfer station off NC 9, north of Mill Spring, will handle. Phone ahead to ask how a stump should be delivered, whether dirt on the roots is a problem and what it will cost.

Can I leave brush at the Polk County recycling trailers?

No. The mobile recycling units take household recyclables such as paper, cardboard and food and drink containers. They are not for brush or yard waste, and the county asks that nothing be left at those sites when the trailer is not there. Take brush to the transfer station or use your town's pickup.

Who picks up limbs in Tryon NC?

The Town of Tryon's street department. Its sanitation page says brush and limbs go to the curb cut to eight feet or less, with bagged leaves and clippings. Larger loads are charged, and debris from lot clearing or contractor work has to be removed by the owner or contractor.
